About OpenSource-DVD

An independent project from Germany that helps everyday Windows users discover, understand and choose free and open source software.

The project

Continuously maintained, carefully selected

OpenSource-DVD is not an automatically generated collection of download links. It is an editorial project built around testing and clear explanations.

Founded in Germany in 2006, the project focuses on free and open source programs and games suitable for Windows. Editorial work includes finding software, trying it in practice, checking version information, preparing screenshots and explaining its purpose in language that is easy to understand.

Our aim is to help people without a technical background answer three questions: What does this program do? Is it suitable for my computer? Where can I find reliable, current information?

Editorial process

From discovery to description

  1. 01

    Find promising projects

We look for actively maintained open source software with a clear purpose and practical value for Windows users.

  2. 02

    Test it in practice

We consider installation, key functions, usability and stability instead of relying on promotional claims.

  3. 03

    Explain it clearly

Concise descriptions, screenshots and version details show what makes the software useful.

  4. 04

    Keep it up to date

We follow releases and project changes, updating descriptions or reassessing inclusion when necessary.

English edition

A focused Top 100 for Windows

The English edition is becoming an independent curated guide to 100 excellent open source programs for Windows.

Instead of reproducing the much larger German catalogue, each English profile focuses on practical use, our reasons for recommending the program, its strengths, limitations and a trustworthy route to current downloads. The first 25 reviews are online now and the collection will grow step by step.

If you maintain an open source project suitable for Windows, you are welcome to suggest it. We review recommendations independently, but cannot guarantee inclusion.
